Chiropractic: Help or Hoax
The chiropractic practice is the center of a major controversy. On one side, there are the people who see chiropractors and believe that they are being helped. On the other side, there are the non-believers who think the practice is fake and a waste of your money. I am planning on going into the chiropractic field as my career and I also currently see a chiropractor. These two traits make this research very valuable to me as I would expect it to be to other patients, prospective chiropractors, and also non-believers. Chiropractic is an up and coming field. People seeking alternative medicine increase every year. This is why I conducted research to answer this question once and for all. Chiropractic: Help or Hoax?

The Research: Annotated Bibliography
Alternative Medicine: an Overview. Jamie Guth. DVD. Princeton, NJ: Films for the Humanities & Sciences, 2005.
This DVD provides an overview of many different types of alternative medicine including chiropractics. It also observes patients who are using these therapies which could make this a very valuable source if their opinions are taken. It also consults many experts in the alternative fields. If a chiropractic expert is spoken with this could also add positively to my research but I don’t believe this will be the main focus of my paper. Jamie Guth currently is the Communications Manager at World Health Organization/ TDR. She has a B.S. degree in Psychology and English and a MALS degree in Literature and Film.
Apfelblat, Dr. Amanda. Personal Interview. 20 Feb. 2008 – 28 Feb. 2008.
I believe that as my primary resource, Dr Apfelblat will be able to give me firsthand knowledge about how people react to her profession. I also think she will be able to give me tons of success stories and honestly tell me if anything has gone wrong in her years of practice. She graduated from Life Chiropractic College in 2000. She specializes in Pediatrics and Family practice in the realm of chiropractics. She was also dubbed the business person of the year for Westland in 2007. I think my interview with her will be another big contribution to my research paper.
Bright, Mary Anne. Holistic Health and Healing. Philadelphia: F. A. Davis Company, 2002.
Bright addresses questions that a health care practitioner may have from their patients about alternative medicine or about their patients who are using alternative medicine. It provides a scope of the practice, clinical examples of the practice, and research that has been done on the practice. It does include a section on the practice of chiropractics. It lists some benefits and summarizes the profession and research done on it as well as comments on the growth of the profession. This I believe will be useful to my research but not the main point of it. Not only is Bright an author but she is also the Associate Director of the NCI’s Cancer Information Service. She is an oncology nurse and an associate professor at the School of Nursing, University of Massachusetts.
Buckman, Robert, and Karl Sabbagh. Magic or Medicine?: an Investigation of Healing & Healers. New York: Prometheus Books, 1995.
Buckman gives a great definition of external therapy that I may use within my paper. Also examples of chiropractics are provided within this book. These may be useful or may not be. I will decide once I have read more. The book is also very outdated and may not even apply to the research question I am asking. I may not use this source at all. Buckman is a medical oncologist at the Princess Margaret Hospital and a professor in the department of medicine at the University of Toronto. He obtained his PhD from Cambridge University in 1972.
Complementary and Alternative Medicine In the United States. Washington, D.C.: The National Academies Press, 2005.
This book highlights the growth of alternative medicine and the importance of it being recognized in the medical world. It also evaluates whether some of these methods are cost-effective compared to conventional medicine. It outlines areas of research within complementary and alternative medicine and discusses integrating them into our normal health care routine. I am not sure this source will be of value to me. It may contain so key points I can use but it is not the focus of my research. The National Academies Press publishes reports from the National Academy of Sciences, The National Academy of Engineering, The Institute of Medicine, and The National Research Council. These all operate under a charter given by the Congress of the United States.
Cuellar, Norma G. Conversations In: Complementary and Alternative Medicine: Insights and Perspectives from Leading Practitioners. Massachusetts: Jones and Bartlett Publishers, 2006.
This book includes 27 interviews with experts in Alternative and Complementary medicine, including chiropractics. This will help bring insight into my research from an expert’s point of view. They also offer some historical prospective of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) that I am not sure will be useful in my paper. Another thing this book includes the answers to questions that these experts are asked on a regular basis about their profession which could aid me in answering some of the questions that I hope to address in this paper. I feel this book will be very important to my research and final paper. Cuellar is an assistant professor at Penn’s school of nursing. She has DSN from the University of Pennsylvania and a BSN from the University of Southern Mississippi.
Freeman, Lyn W., and G. Frank Lawlis. Mosby’s Complementary & Alternative Medicine: a Research-Based Approach. Missouri: Mosby, Inc., 2001.
Freeman provides research that is relevant coverage of complementary and alternative medicine. Solid research will be the basis of each outline of complementary or alternative medicine fields. It also reviews contradictions, indications, and clinically controlled trials of each therapy. I feel this book will be very useful to my research paper because that is exactly what a research paper is on. It may not be the main focus of my paper but it may provide research that backs up one opinion or the other. Freeman has a PhD. She is president of Mind of matters research and is Executive Faculty at Saybrook Graduate School and Research Center.
Haugen, David. Alternative Medicine: Opposing Viewpoints. Michigan: Greenhaven Press, 2008.
Haugen is very big on seeing the opposing viewpoints on each branch of Alternative medicine. Each chapter is dedicated either for or against a certain practice of alternative medicine, including chiropractics. I think this book will be important to my research because my research question is all about the opposing viewpoints on chiropractics. I will most likely refer to this book a lot. Green Haven press gets all their information from primary resources and uses it in a pro/ con format.
Milton, Doris, and Samuel Benjamin.Complementary & Alternative Therapies: an Implementation Guide to Integrative Health Care.USA: Health Forum, Inc., an American Hospital Association company, 1999.
Milton and Benjamin have provided a book to help health care leaders with integrating alternative and complementary therapies into the health care system. It mentions that it includes “key factors for consideration of implementation” which could prove to be useful to me when arguing for the chiropractic side. I am not sure I will use material from this book. It will not be the focus of my paper at all but may include some good key points. Doris Milton has a PhD and is a RN. Samuel Benjamin has a MD.
Singh, Simon. Trick or Treatment: The Undeniable Facts about Alternative Medicine. New York: W.W. Norton & Co., 2008.
Singh offers a section called “The truth about chiropractic therapy” which I feel will be very useful to my research if not key. The title of the book is the basis of my research question. This book offers a great definition of chiropractics that I may choose to use. Also it includes both the benefits and dangers of the practice that I will need to cover in my paper. Singh has received an honorary Doctor or Design degree from the University of the West of England, a Kelvin medal from the institute of physics, and a Doctor of Science degree from the University of London in the last couple years. He is currently being sued by the British Chiropractic Association for claims he has made in an article about this book.
Spencer, John W. Complementary/ Alternative Medicine: an Evidence-Based Approach. Missouri: Mosby, Inc., 1999.
Spencer provides evidence-based information about the effectiveness of a range of complementary and alternative treatments, including chiropractics. It explores the types of studies that have been done on these therapies. I think this book will be very important to my research because my audience will need to know the effectiveness of chiropractics in order to judge whether it works or is just a scam. Spencer has a PhD from the University of Maryland where he is part of the school of undergraduate studies. He also has an MD from Adelphi University.
